IFR has the mission of developing sustainable freight shipping ways by using multimodal transportation. Environmental sustainability is therefore the key priority to be developed in the logistic sector. In order to obtain this objective, IFR follows two main patterns:
- CO2 emissions' reduction:
The main effect of the road-rail multimodal shipping compared to the full-road transportation is the drastic reduction of the polluting emissions. The objective is reached in two ways: the first one is concerning the fuel factor, which is based on the fuel-saving obtained by the use of rail services instead of truck/road ones. The rail service is electrified, so no diesel consumption is involved. The second one is concerning the possibility of loading more goods on each single train, increasing the amount of goods transported with a single locomotive, exactly 48 containers per train, equivalent to 24 road trains.

- Noise reduction
In partnership with FFSS, IFR is testing noise-reducing multimodal wagons in order to drastically reduce the train noises, with the main objective of reducing the acoustic pollution caused by trains.
