Two weeks have passed since the terrible rail accident happened near Milan, and the railway line has not yet been fully restored.
IFR, the company managing the multimodal rail link 'IDA Pescara <> CIM Novara', has informed all its clients that the railway line interruption caused by the Pioltello accident (where a derailed passenger train caused the death of 3 people) is affecting also the Freight Rail Service which are using railway lines that are fully congestionate by the diverted heavy rail traffic, which serve all the passenger services as well. A situation that is bringing negative consequences to IFR business plan, in such a way that the company has been forced to reduce train departures and to use an alternative route, which has several restrictions on the heights and widths of the cargo, clearly impacting the service.
The MTO IFR is urging all parts to restore the level of service to normality and pays respect to the victims of the tragic accident and to their families. This case, together with the Ranstatt event occurred last summer, demonstrates the fragility of the freight rail network.
IFR srl and Michel Verscheure Transport, both MTOs, have announced a commercial partnership in the raw material and semifinished products logistics.
Both operators are currently providing logistics services for top-range multinationals and they have created a new multimodal line connecting Belgium and Italy.
After the initial test, which lasted few months, the two partners showed that commitment to the Multimodal Transport brought positive externalities as well as a reduction of the logistic costs, two key factors for global trade players.
Goods and raw materials are stored in containers which are then loaded on trains that service a line of 1,500 kms of rail connecting Antwerp (Belgium) to Pescara (Italy). Once arrived to the Abruzzo Freight Village, containers are then stored on dedicated and geo-localized spaces in the terminal.
From there, with a daily transport plan, containers reach with a daily service the production plant. This logistic stream is supplying directly the production lines, removing fragmentation factors.
This is just one of the multiple models which can balance the sustainability factors (economical, social and environmental).
Considering only this logistic route, the two partners have declared that there will be a yearly reduction of 2,848 tons of CO2 emissions compared to the traditional only truck services.
